Whether in print, on television, and even increasingly on the Internet, it is becoming harder to find unbiased news. So called “balanced” debates are often discussions between gradients of the same perspective while no regard at all is given to a truly opposing point of view. Politics, public opinion, and economics all contribute to a shading of the way the reporting is done in the mainstream media. We do not believe that there is a great conspiracy behind most to the mainstream news, but the fact is that the sacred trust of journalism is principally in the hands of large corporations with their various special interests that are often in conflict to an uncompromising pursuit of the truth. They feign integrity by underreporting or omitting news that is inconvenient to their interests.
Nevertheless, The nuuz is not here to bash the mainstream media. These organizations are generally trustworthy with what they report. The problems are in the commentary and the fact that frequently the most valuable news is buried in the corners and back pages or worse yet excluded altogether. The problem is not what is actually reported. Omission of information that would well serve the public is perhaps the greatest offense of the mainstream media. Balance to us means giving attention to the underreported news and giving a rebuttal to the one side heard in commentary that verges on propaganda.
Our goal is to, in our unique way, contribute to the efforts of the blogosphere, various other alternative news outlets, and satirists to balance a heavily slanted world of news. In many cases, we will simply draw attention to articles and video from other news sources that we feel need more attention. In other cases, we will present completely original reports. Many will find our greatest contribution to be our analysis and commentary on what is reported by larger news outlets. Recognizing that the problem is not so much that the truth is not out there, we accumulate, organize, highlight, and link to the news that everyone seems to miss.
This site is called The Nuuz because we don’t take ourselves so seriously. Although journalistic integrity is a very serious matter, so much of what is reported and believed is really little more than fodder for the humorists. Saturday Night Live, The Daily Show, and Stephen Colbert do well to point out the imbecility of mainstream news. We laugh with the best of them but we desire to back up the laughs with a solid core. We certainly hope that you will enjoy what we have produced and you will find that much of what we report is educational and refreshing.
